WHO STARTED THE GREEN BERET PROJECT?
The Green Beret Project was started by Green Berets and law enforcement professionals with a passion and vision for addressing the negative influences and patterns of our nation’s youth.
WHAT IS A GREEN BERET?
A Green Beret is a U.S. Army Special Forces Soldier. On October 12, 1961, president John F. Kennedy visited the US Army Special Warfare Center at Fort Bragg in order to gain a better understanding of Army Special Forces. Soon after, the president authorized the “Green Beret” as the official headgear for all US Army Special Forces and the Unconventional Warriors were thereafter and ever known as “The Green Berets.”
WHY IS IT CALLED THE GREEN BERET PROJECT?
The Green Beret process is a critical piece to successfully accomplishing the goals of the Green Beret Project. We identify resources within a community, and then, collaborate, train and partner with those resources to provide belonging, purpose and hope for their youth.
WHAT IS THE GREEN BERET PROJECT?
The Green Beret Project is filled with talented individuals from a wide range of communities, all with a passion to help youth and improve the neighborhoods in which they reside. Our volunteers include active duty military, investment brokers, law-enforcement officials, teachers, civic leaders, business personnel, college students, former offenders, and academics. Fundamentally, the Green Beret Project believes in the power of relationships and strives to identify and establish collaborative partnerships with numerous other organizations to gain greater effectiveness and efficiencies by taking a whole of effort approach.
HOW DID THE GREEN BERET PROJECT GET STARTED?
Operating solely on volunteers and the funding out of personal savings, the project began to identify the needs of local communities, establish relationships with various people within these neighborhoods, and connect with local youth by simply spending time with them. Early on, the Green Beret Project was able to acquire the use of a dilapidated, out-of-use facility in one of the housing projects in Dover, DE. It was a decisive success brought about by investing in relationships, creative thinking, and lots of hard work. It is still the project’s center of operations for that city providing a safe place for the area youth, after-school and on weekends.
